STRONG IN OUR DIVERSITY, LET'S KEEP ON THE FIGHT

The 20th July, 2019, was a specially colorful and a sunny afternoon of “Fiesta” in Montpellier, with the occasion of the 26th Gay Pride that brought for this new edition the slogan: “Marche des Diversités: mettons la haine hors du combat”, where hundreds of members from the LGBTQI+ community as well as heterosexual people gathered together to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, where pride began, the violent clash that kicked off the gay rights movement in New York City in 1969.

As every year of pride in Montpellier since 1994 this new edition was the occasion to celebrate the courageous group of homosexual people as Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992), who tried to live with dignity and self-respect while hard circumstances of police pressure and an anti-gay legal system pushed them to fight towards freedom.

They marched from the Peyrou Park to The Comedy Square holding and shouting out loud powerful phrases like: “Be yourself”, “Strong in our diversity”, “Equality, respect and diversity”, “Live our sexual orientation and our gender identity is a fundamental freedom”, and even they song the lyrics of the Stonewall Anthem:

“We are the Stonewall Girls,
we wear our hair in curls,
we wear no underwear,
we show our public hair,
we wear our dungarees,
above our Nelly knees”.

This was also the opportunity to sensitize people about some realistic facts from homosexuality. According to the organizers the 8% of French people still think the homosexuality as a mental illness. 72 states have a repressive legal system against homosexuals, sometimes sentenced to capital punishment or life in prison. Another fact is that in 2018 the World Health Organization (WHO) has removed trans identity as a mental and behavioral disorder. Furthermore, what about the fact that homosexual or bisexual people would be 10 to 13 times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers* ?

"For every movement and every injustice, there is a moment that changes history".
